Happy New Year and happy birthday, to me…
41. This is the year. I can feel it! This year, I am starting the year off with the phrase, “I am enough”.
Last year when I sat down to write my first birthday blog post, I was nervous and also excited about turing 40. I have always heard that the 40’s are a woman’s best years because you have more confidence, you are coming into your own and you have finally started to figure out this thing we call life.
Little did I know that the year 40 would be the most challenging, yet most grateful year I have had so far in my life.
40 and 2018 all started off with a trip to the ER. This led to months of visiting specialists to finally receive a diagnosis and procedure to fix a rare malformation in my liver that I had actually been born with. It was scary, it was costly, on many levels, and it was downright exhausting. But, thankfully, I had an incredible team of doctors at my ready, the full-on support of my strong husband and resilient son, and I had all of you to keep me looking forward to the future of growing my business and connecting with more inspiring people. This was a long year, and I am still in a place of reflection and wrapping my brain around everything that happened. But, I am happy to welcome 2019.
Every year, we look at the New Year with a new perspective.
It’s generally a way to reset and start over again. Because my birthday falls on the 2nd, I have always wrapped up my resolutions and birthday wishes into one. Perhaps with the hopes that I will actually accomplish my resolutions one of these years.
This year, I start the new year and my 41st birthday with a completely new vision.
I am actually here! I see life, my family and the future with a new hope of true, good health and energy. Something that my poor body has really never known. Of course, I have goals, I have A LOT of them. But, I am taking a little different approach to them this year. I am going to slow things down to give more time to what is truly important. My family, my self, my friends, and my clients.
How many of you have your Self on the top of your list for the year?
I am not talking about your resolution to lose Xlbs or stick to this diet or that workout(I use this as an example because I have done this for so long). I am asking you about how you are going to take time for yourself. Whether it is listening to what your body needs and giving it exactly that, taking a moment to breathe and be grateful for what you have in front of you, take yourself on regular self-dates or celebrate the accomplishments you usually forget about quickly?
Let’s add YOU to your list. I have!
“I am enough”. This phrase was brought to me by my friend and gifted life coach, Ali Poulton. It has been in my mind ever since she simply told me this phrase during one of our video chats last year. It has resonated so much with me on so many levels. Many of us hold off doing something because we don’t feel like we are ready for it. Case in point, because I happen to be a photographer, I hear multiple times a day from women and men, “I want to do a shoot, but I need to lose Xlbs first”. Boudoir, headshots, family, teens, you name it, you all have said it. I am even guilty of saying this! But, you know what? Why do we have to have a specific # of lbs to have our photo taken? In the last 18months, I have gained over 50lbs. Yes, a lot of that has to do with my diagnosis, but a lot of it is because I did not put ME top on my list.
I am enough.
Quoted by Ali Poulton (Executive and personal life coach)
After the year I have had, I am not going to hold off doing things because I feel like I am not ready for it. I may never be a “perfect” weight (insert your “thing” here), but “I am enough” right now. I can love photos of myself, right now.
We can use this phrase for any part of our lives.
Take it with you when you decide to apply for that next job you want to go for, when you have the opportunity to talk to someone you like, asking for that raise or promotion and finally gifting yourself because you hustled and accomplished something that was super challenging. How many opportunities have we missed in life, because we didn’t think we were enough to take a chance at them? I know I am not going to miss out anymore. Life is too short, and there are too many incredible things waiting to be experienced today.
